Arias nets brace as Palmeiras hits Remo for six
SAO PAULO, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Jhon Arias scored twice as Palmeiras kept its Brazilian Serie A title hopes alive on Thursday by romping to a 6-1 home victory over Remo.
Colombia international playmaker Arias struck twice in the opening 15 minutes and Mauricio extended the lead following a swift counterattack.
Palmeiras was gifted a fourth goal when Marcelinho inadvertently turned the ball into his own net before Ze Welison pulled one back on the stroke of halftime.
Argentina international striker Jose Manuel Lopez and former Lazio winger Felipe Anderson added second-half goals as Palmeiras cruised to their 21st win of the campaign.
"Sometimes we've been efficient but lacked effectiveness, however that wasn't the case today," Palmeiras manager Abel Ferreira told a post-match news conference.
"We're now in the home stretch and still alive in several competitions, which is a very good position to be in," he added.
Palmeiras is second in the 20-team standings with 73 points, three behind Flamengo with four matchdays remaining in the season. Remo is second-last with 29 points.
