Andorra goalkeeper Owono expresses 'enormous pain' over death of Tenerife's Jesus de Miguel
MADRID, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono on Wednesday expressed his "enormous pain" over the death of Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel following a collision between the two players in the closing moments of Monday's Spanish second-division match.
De Miguel was chasing a ball into the Andorra half in the 96th minute when Owono raced out of his penalty area and collided with him, striking him in the chest with his knee.
Owono was sent off and the match was abandoned as an unconscious De Miguel was carried off the pitch. De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest and, although emergency services managed to resuscitate him, he died on Tuesday morning after his neurological condition deteriorated overnight.
"These are the most difficult days of my life," said Owono in a statement issued by Andorra.
"I struggle to find the words, and it is very hard for me to come to terms with what has happened."
"I feel enormous pain over the loss of Jesus. I think of him, his family, and everyone who loved him," said the 25-year-old, who has deactivated his Instagram account following the abuse he has received over the past two days.
"I know there will be many issues to address, and I will face whatever comes with the utmost respect. But right now, honestly, I cannot think about anything other than Jesus and the pain we are all experiencing."
Copa del Rey matches scheduled for this week have been postponed following the tragedy. Saturday's second-division match between Granada and Tenerife has also been postponed, with Tenerife due to hold a memorial for De Miguel at its Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez Stadium that evening.
Andorra's home game against Mallorca has also been postponed, while the Spanish players' union has called for the suspension of domestic football fixtures through November 9 as a mark of respect for De Miguel. The request has yet to be fully approved.
