Myanmar marks International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction
YANGON, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar held a ceremony in Nay Pyi Taw to mark the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, the state-owned daily The Global New Light of Myanmar reported on Wednesday.
During the ceremony on Tuesday, Vice President U Nyo Saw said that, as Myanmar is highly vulnerable to natural disasters, the country places great emphasis on pre-disaster preparedness and disaster risk reduction activities in accordance with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 and the Disaster Management Law in Myanmar.
He highlighted that capability and inclusive participation are vital factors in building disaster resilience and that it is necessary to strengthen resilience step by step, starting from individual households up to the national level, as a national duty.
Observed annually on Oct. 13, the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction focuses this year on the theme "Resilience Starts at Home." The message emphasizes that everyone deserves a home that is safe, affordable and able to withstand the hazards around it.
