Brazil's Gremio hit with FIFA transfer ban

RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) Gremio has been barred from registering new players due to an outstanding debt tied to the 2024 signing of Colombian midfielder Miguel Monsalve, world football governing body FIFA said on Friday.

The ban will apply for up to three consecutive transfer windows, or 18 months, unless the Brazilian club settles the debt with Colombian side Independiente Medellin.

Monsalve, 22, joined Gremio in July 2024 but is currently on loan at Argentine outfit Estudiantes de La Plata.

The Porto Alegre-based club was placed under regulatory oversight in August by ANRESF, the independent financial fair play agency established by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).

Under the measure, Gremio must obtain prior approval from ANRESF before completing any new player registrations as it seeks to restructure nearly 16 million reais (around 3.2 million U.S. dollars) in outstanding debt.

Gremio's legal department is in talks with Independiente Medellin to reach a settlement and lift the FIFA ban, according to local media reports.

One of Brazil's most successful clubs, Gremio is currently 18th in the country's 20-team Serie A standings with seven wins from 29 games. ■
