U.S. national debt tops 40 trillion USD for first time in history
The U.S. national debt has surpassed 40 trillion dollars for the first time in history, according to data released by the Treasury Department on Wednesday.
The data shows that debt held by the public and intragovernmental holdings stood at 32.266 trillion dollars and 7.782 trillion dollars, respectively, bringing total public debt outstanding to 40.047 trillion dollars as of Tuesday.
The milestone, reached months earlier than expected, reflects the U.S. federal government's persistent budget deficits, as spending continues to exceed revenue, adding to the national debt.
Iran warns regional states against assisting U.S. Army
A top Iranian military general on Wednesday warned countries in the West Asia region against assisting an "aggressive" U.S. Army.
Ali Abdollahi, chief of staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, made the remarks in a social media post while stressing that Iran is monitoring every movement in the region.
"We warn that providing any assistance or facility to the aggressive U.S. Army constitutes complicity with U.S. military forces," Abdollahi said.
Trump threatens "most crushing" economic warfare, accuses Iran of failing to make deal
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday what he described as "the most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country."
"This will be Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale," Trump posted on Truth Social, accusing Iran of failing to take the opportunity to make a deal.
"Their navy is gone, their air force is destroyed, their military factories are now rubble, their currency is worthless, and their country is hanging by a thread," he said.
Children account for one-third of reported Ebola deaths in DR Congo: UNICEF
Children account for about one-third of reported deaths in the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), despite representing only around one-fifth of confirmed cases, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said Wednesday in its latest situation report.
According to UNICEF, children aged 17 and below account for approximately 21 percent of confirmed cases but 33 percent of reported deaths, pointing to a "concerning upward trend" in the mortality burden among children, calling for continued attention to appropriate pediatric care.
UNICEF warned that treatment services remain under pressure. Service delivery has been affected by delayed referrals, overcrowding, limited critical care and pediatric capacity, resource constraints and gaps in data reporting, according to the agency.
Trump says U.S. pauses 50 pct tariffs against Canada for 3 days
U.S. President Donald Trump said late Tuesday that the 50 percent tariffs on some Canadian goods scheduled to take effect Wednesday were paused for three days.
Canada and the United States had reached a deal, subject to the finalization of documents, Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney later said in a statement that substantial progress has been made, "although there is important work still to be done."
