Hormuz Strait's opening hinges on U.S. fulfillment of commitments under MoU: Iran's parliament speaker
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said Tuesday the Strait of Hormuz will not be opened unless the United States fulfills its commitments under the U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding (MoU), the official news agency IRNA reported.
Qalibaf, during a session of the legislative body, listed some of the conditions under the MoU for the waterway's reopening as lifting the anti-Iran naval blockade, releasing Iranian frozen assets, removing oil sanctions, and stopping threats and military operations on all fronts.
The United States must implement all the provisions it has committed to under the MoU, otherwise the strait will not be opened, he said.
No talks or conversations going on, or scheduled, with Iran -- Trump
U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday said there were no conversations taking place or scheduled with Iran, noting that the Hormuz Strait is open.
"There are no talks or conversations going on, or scheduled, with the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Naval Blockade remains in full force and effect. The Hormuz Strait is open and operating," Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
All water mines have been removed or detonated, said Trump.
UAE says halts trade with Iran after detecting 2 ballistic missiles
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has suspended all trade, commercial exchanges and financial transactions with Iran until further notice, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs said early Wednesday, a few hours after the country said it detected two ballistic missiles launched from Iran.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Afra Al Hameli, the director of the foreign ministry's strategic communications department, said the decision came in light of regional escalations that undermine regional and international peace and security.
The statement reiterated the UAE's commitment to dialogue, cooperation and regional integration as essential means of advancing peace, stability and prosperity in the region.
Ebola outbreak in DR Congo far from under control: WHO
The World Health Organization (WHO) warned Tuesday that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) remains far from under control, with the country having reported more than 5,000 confirmed cases and 2,378 deaths.
As of Aug. 16, the DRC had reported 5,021 confirmed cases across 55 health zones in six provinces, with a case fatality rate of 47.4 percent, according to the latest report released by the WHO Regional Office for Africa on Tuesday.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the outbreak was "far from being under control" and had gained a considerable lead over response efforts, warning of a high risk of further spread within the country and internationally.
Death toll rises to 13 after record rain batters eastern Japan
The death toll from record-breaking torrential rain that struck Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, last week has risen to 13, while one person remains missing, the prefectural government said Tuesday.

Death toll from Indonesia's 7.7-magnitude earthquake rises to 70
The death toll from a 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province has risen to 70, with 132 others injured, authorities said Tuesday.
Bramantyo, operations director of Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency, said 40 of the injured were seriously hurt and 92 sustained minor injuries.
With no further reports of missing people, search and rescue teams have shifted their focus to area sweeping and support for recovery operations led by the National Disaster Management Agency.
