U.S. forces launch new strikes on Iran as conflict widens

U.S. forces on Wednesday night conducted fresh strikes against Iran in retaliation for Tehran's latest attacks as the conflict widened across the region.

The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said on social media that its forces completed "a heavy wave of strikes" at 10 p.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday (0200 GMT Thursday) in response to Iran's attempted missile attacks a day earlier.

According to CENTCOM, U.S. forces struck dozens of targets belonging to Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps, including military command centers, missile and drone facilities, coastal surveillance and defense sites, and maritime capabilities.

Saudi Arabia announces new maritime defense alliance amid regional tensions

Saudi Arabia announced Thursday the establishment of a multinational maritime defense alliance it said aimed at protecting shipping lanes in the Red Sea, the Bab al-Mandab Strait and the Gulf of Aden.

The announcement came after a meeting in Riyadh hosted by the Saudi Defense Ministry, which was attended by military chiefs and representatives from 43 countries and an EU delegation, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

Fourteen countries issued a joint declaration supporting the alliance, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Pakistan, Türkiye, Egypt, Jordan, Yemen, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Sudan, Djibouti and Somalia, it reported.

UNECE says over 434,000 hectares burned in Europe this year

More than 434,000 hectares have already burned across Europe this year, according to the latest available data, said the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) on Thursday.

Devastating fires in the Gironde region of France destroyed around 42,000 hectares of pine forest, and forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents and tourists.

Spain has experienced one of its worst wildfire seasons in decades, with more than 200,000 hectares burned, twice its historical annual average, according to a press release of UNECE.

Death toll from Japan's Kumamoto earthquake rises to 34, thousands remain in shelters

The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck Japan's Kumamoto Prefecture has risen to 34, including cases still under investigation for links to the disaster, according to the prefectural disaster response headquarters.

At a disaster response headquarters meeting held Thursday afternoon, Kumamoto Prefecture Government officials announced that 34 people had died, including nine whose deaths are still being investigated to determine whether they were caused by the magnitude 7.1 tremor.

At a Nippon Paper factory in Yatsushiro City, where the earthquake caused a smokestack to collapse, rescue teams pulled 10 people from the site. Eight of them were confirmed dead, while two sustained injuries. Another person who had been missing was found in the rubble shortly after noon on Thursday, though the individual's condition has not yet been disclosed.
