Xinhua Headlines: Long March legacy inspires innovation breakthroughs in city of historic turning point
ZUNYI, Guizhou, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Lei Guangren has crossed the weathered stone arch bridge countless times in Zunyi, a city in southwest China's Guizhou Province. Known as Yinghong Bridge, or "Welcoming the Red Army Bridge," it bears quiet witness to the Chinese Red Army's epic Long March more than nine decades ago.
Such Long March-associated place names pepper every corner of the mountainous city, earning Zunyi its resonant title: the "city of historic turning point."
"The Zunyi Meeting, held here during the Long March, marked a life-or-death turning point in the history of the Communist Party of China (CPC)," said Lei, 78, former curator of the Zunyi Meeting memorial museum. "From then on, the Party found the right direction and leadership, stayed the course toward its goals, defeated the enemies and embarked on a path of independence and self-reliance."
The year 2026 marks the 90th anniversary of the victory of the Long March. Lei believes the spirit of what American journalist Edgar Snow described as "an odyssey unequaled in modern times" continues to inspire China as it pursues its Second Centenary Goal.
In October 1934, the CPC was forced to retreat from the Central Soviet Area in east China's Jiangxi Province and move northwest after enduring a series of encirclement campaigns by rival forces of the Kuomintang party (KMT). The CPC-led Red Army fought its way across the Xiangjiang River in Guangxi and broke through the KMT troops' blockade, but suffered tens of thousands of casualties in the battle.
