GLOBALink | China's wetlands set model for regional migratory bird conservation, cooperation
Many migratory birds depend on China's wetlands, Asia's largest and 4th largest worldwide by area, as vital stopovers along the world's busiest flyway. These habitats not only foster biodiversity but also serve as a regional hub for conservation training and cross-border cooperation across the Asia-Pacific region.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): YANG QIONG, Senior engineer from Guangdong Neilingding Futian National Nature Reserve
"After crossing the Pacific Ocean on their long journey, migratory birds need to find a nearby site to rest. Most stay at (China's) Shenzhen Bay for one to two weeks before continuing their northward migration. Our reserve covers a small area, yet hosts huge numbers of birds. Within such a limited space, right in the urban hinterland, we have to cater to the birds' demands, including food supplies, open space for flight, and safe roosting grounds. This calls for refined management."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): PYAE PHYO AUNG, Executive director at the Nature Conservation Society-Myanmar
"China has (set) an example for the entire flyway by significantly stopping coastal land reclamation and successfully restoring degraded wetlands, such as Yancheng and the Yellow River Delta, as UNESCO World Heritage sites and national nature reserves."
