Over 40,000 affected by flooding after embankment breach in Myanmar's Ayeyarwady
YANGON, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- More than 40,000 people have been affected by flooding following the breach of the Ngawun River embankment in Myanmar's Ayeyarwady region, from July 30 to August 7, according to the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement on Saturday.
The embankment breach occurred in Laymyethna township in Ayeyarwady region on July 30 after sand boils and land subsidence were observed.
To assist flood victims, temporary relief camps have been opened, including 13 in Laymyethna township, four in Hinthada township, six in Yegyi township and one in Kyonpyaw township.
Rescue and relief operations have been carried out jointly by government departments, military units, the Myanmar Police Force, the Myanmar Fire Services Department, social rescue organizations and volunteer groups, the ministry said.
As of Friday night, floodwaters in urban wards had gradually declined, while about 35 percent of communication services had been restored, it said, adding that a Cell on Wheels and a B2B satellite terminal have been installed at relief camps to support emergency communications.
Food supplies have continued to be distributed to affected people, with more than 146 million kyats (over 69,523 U.S. dollars) already provided for relief efforts, it said. Enditem
